Hurricanes Fall to Hot-Shooting Georgia Tech, 66-57

ATLANTA, GA. (AP) – Iman Shumpert had 19 points, Lance Storrs led Georgia Tech’s 3-point assault and the Yellow Jackets beat Miami 66-57 on Sunday in the final game at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Storrs had five 3-pointers for 15 points and Shumpert and Jason Morris, who had 11 points, each added three long-range shots as Georgia Tech overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half. The Yellow Jackets had 12 3-pointers, one shy of their season high.

Georgia Tech (13-17 overall, 5-11 ACC) put together its first two-game winning streak since January.

Adrian Thomas had 14 points and Durand Scott had 13 for Miami (18-13, 6-10 ACC), which was hurt by 21 turnovers.

ACC Seeds Set
Miami will have the No. 9 seed in this week’s ACC Tournament and will open tourney play on Thurs., March 10, at noon versus 8-seed Virginia (16-14, 7-9) on the ACC Network. The winner advances to Friday’s quarterfinals to square off versus top-seeded North Carolina (24-6, 14-2) at Noon on the ACC Network and ESPN2.

For Starters
For the second-straight game, Miami started Durand Scott, Malcolm Grant, Garrius Adams, Reggie Johnson and Adrian Thomas. Scott and Grant have started all 31 games for UM this season.

Cleaning the Glass
With a game-high 12 rebounds, Reggie Johnson posted his third-straight.game with double-figure boards. It is the 15th time he has accomplished this this season and the 18th time in his two-year career as a Hurricane.

Century Club
Durand Scott registered his 100th assist of the season this afternoon to become the first Hurricane since John Salmons in 2001-02 to turn in back-to-back 100-assist seasons.

Malcolm Grant needs just three assists to join Scott with 100. They would become the first UM teammates to accomplish this in back-to-back seasons since Thomas Hocker and Kevin Presto achieved the feat in both 1987-88 and 1988-89. In 2009, Grant and Scott became the first UM duo since 1992-93 to collect 100 assists in the same season and the fourth pair of teammates to do so in UM history.

From Downtown
In his final regular-season road game, Adrian Thomas went 4-of-6 from beyond to extend his three-point streak to 16-straight games for the second-longest active streak in the ACC. His 80 three-pointers this season are sixth-most in a single season by a Hurricane — trailing Malcolm Grant‘s 82 in fifth place, while his 191 career threes rank fifth. Thomas has hit three-plus threes 15 times this season and 32 times over his six-year career.

Grant hit one three-pointer versus the Yellow Jackets to extend his three-point streak to an ACC-long 18-straight games. With 143 career threes in just his second season as Hurricane, Grant is10th place all-time in program history in triples made, while his 82 three-pointers this season are fifth best in Miami history.

Tale of Two Halves
In the opening stanza, the Hurricanes handled the Yellow Jacket press effectively and converted 50 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from long range behind 11 first-half points from Adrian Thomas to build the 34-27 halftime lead. But in the second half, Miami turned the ball over 14 times and shot just 33.3% percent from the field, while Georgia Tech picked it up on both sides of the ball and outscored Miami 39-23 in the half en route to the 66-57 win.

Turnover Trouble
In two games versus the Yellow Jackets this season, the Hurricanes have turned the ball over a combined 49 times. In the February win over Georgia Tech, Miami committed a season-high 28 turnovers, while the ‘Canes registered 21 today — the second most this season. The Yellow Jackets scored 23 points off Miami’s turnovers this afternoon, while UM managed just seven off of GT’s 14 miscues. Georgia Tech’s Iman Shumpert, who leads the league in steals, grabbed five steals in each meeting between the squads.
