Chris Perez enters the season has Miami’s undisputed closer and will be a candidate for numerous ACC and national awards … named to the 2006 Brooks Wallace Award Preseason Watch List … spent the summer on the U.S. National team with UM teammate Jon Jay and some of college baseball’s best players … began the 2005 season in the starting rotation but moved into the closer role following a long layoff due to injury … was 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA and two saves in seven appearances for Team USA … excellent frame and a live fastball to go with it that runs in the low to mid 90s … made 11 appearances in 2004 including one spot start on March 20 against Illinois-Chicago … did not pitch during the final two months of his freshman season due to a fatigued shoulder.
Sophomore (2005)
Perez is Miami’s undisputed closer … was automatic in save situations since returning from injury and suspension … 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA and a team-best seven saves in 45.1 innings with 52 strikeouts and 25 walks … held opponents to a .204 average … started the season as the No. 3 starter … was suspended for a violation of team rules prior to the N.C. State series and did not return for eight additional games due to an injury to his pitching arm … was 2-0 with seven saves and 1.24 ERA as a reliever … appeared in 24 games, 20 as a reliever. Lincoln Super Regional (6/11): Pitched two innings and gave up a solo home run with three walks and two strikeouts. Coral Gables Regional (6/4-5): Closed out both games against Mississippi State, including the Regional Championship … earned his seventh save of the season on 6/4, giving up a hit in 1.1 innings … relieved Andrew Lane with two outs in the ninth inning and two men on base and retired the only batter he faced to seal the victory in the Regional Championship (6/5). At ACC Tournament (5/25-26): Gave up his first runs in 18.2 innings against Clemson. At Clemson (5/20-21): Totaled 3.0 innings of relief with five strikeouts and three walks in two appearances. At Virginia (5/13-14): Picked up saves in each of Miami’s wins … struck out two in 1.1 innings in the opener … sat five Cavaliers down via strikeout in two innings of work the next night … Vs. Jacksonville (5/8): Picked up the win, striking out three and walking four in 3.1 innings of one-hit work. Vs. Maryland (4/30-5/1): Made two appearances and totaled 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and no walks … earned a save in the series opener. Vs. Florida State (4/22-23): Had saves in both his appearances in a combined 2.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. At North Carolina (4/16-17): Grabbed his first save of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in his first appearance … kept Miami in the game with 3.0 innings of no-hit ball in the series finale. At Virginia Tech (4/9-10): Pitched well in a blowout in his first performance … earned his first win as a reliever, giving up one run on four hits in 2.0 innings. Vs. Oral Roberts (4/1, 3): Returned from injury and suspension to make two appearances, striking out four with no hits in 3.0 innings. Vs. George Washington (2/27): Started and gave up three unearned runs, with eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings to get the win. At Florida (2/20): Had a disasterous outing, retiring only one batter and giving up six earned runs on only two hits and four walks. Vs. South Florida (2/13): Won his second start of the season, striking out nine with no walks in 6.0 innings. Vs. High Point (2/6): Earned his first collegiate win, pitching five solid innings and giving up one earned run.
Freshman (2004)
Pitched early and often out of the bullpen in 2004 … made 11 appearances for Miami over the first two months of the season, including one spot start on March 20 against Illinois-Chicago … posted a 7.71 ERA in 18.2 innings of work … struck out 30 batters while walking 18 … picked up his first save in his Hurricanes’ debut vs. Florida on Feb. 15 giving up three runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two to pick up the save … struck out a career-high five batters vs. FIU in 3.1 innings of work on Feb. 26 … worked 1.0 perfect inning striking out 2 at USF on March 17 … started the first game of his career vs. Illinois-Chicago on March 20 … pitched 1.0 inning striking out one vs. Penn State on March 27 … struck out four batters in 2.0 innings vs. Georgia Tech April 2 … worked 2.0 innings striking out five and gave up one run vs. Florida State on April 18.
The Pendleton School
Played for Mark Morowski at The Pendleton School as a senior … spent his first three high school seasons at Manatee High School playing for head coach Al Melnick … all-Manatee County selection as a junior and senior. Senior (2003): Perez went 7-2 for The Pendleton School with a 3.30 ERA and 78 strikeouts … also hit .548 while playing first base … led his team to a 24-4 record. Junior (2002): He went 3-4 for Manatee High School with a 3.00 ERA and five saves … recorded 76 strikeouts … earned honorable mention all-state recognition … selected to the Sarasota Classic All-Tournament team … hit .300 with four home runs as the designated hitter … team won districts. Sophomore (2001): Perez was 3-0 for Manatee with a 2.50 ERA and 48 strikeouts … named the team’s offensive MVP … selected to the Sarasota Classic All-Tournament team.
