An All-ACC rower with a bright future, Margaret Matia enters into her first year as a part of the University of Miami rowing staff as an assistant coach. Matia will serve as the novice coach for the Hurricanes program.
Matia is a Level Two United States Rowing Certified Coach. She comes to UM after spending the past year coaching at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia. Her experience coaching also spreads to her recent time spent at Georgetown Day School (Washington, D.C.) and with the Thompson’s Boat Center, also located in the nation’s capital.
A graduate of the University of Virginia having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Archaeology in 2004, she immediately enrolled in the UVA graduate program to earn a M.Ed. in Research, Statistics and Evaluation.
During her collegiate career at UVA, Matia earned First team All-America honors as a senior. Also an All-ACC and Academic Honor Roll honoree, the former Cavaliers captain was a four-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Champion, as well as a three-time NCAA participant.
Upon graduation, Matia spent three years training at the Potomac Boat Club in Washington, D.C. In 2007, she had the honor of being a member of the U.S. Pan-American Team and competed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Once in Brazil, she earned a gold medal in the women’s double sculls and a silver medal in the women’s quadruple sculls. Matia is a multiple-time national gold medalist in sweep and sculling events. She’s a Canadian Henley champion and Head of the Charles four-time gold-medalist.
