Canes Rowing Race Day Central: NCAA Championships
GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Hurricanes are set to make history.
When Miami takes the water this weekend on Lake Lanier for the Division I NCAA Championships and lines up to compete against some of the nation’s top rowing programs, it will be a culmination of months of preparation and hard work.
It will also be the first time the Hurricanes compete in the national championship regatta.
That’s not an opportunity any of them are taking for granted.
“I would describe this as monumental,” said senior coxswain Maria Mastrando. “I feel like we definitely have gone through a lot of changes and even though there’s 28 of us on the plane now, this dream happened a long time ago, before even I was here. The seniors that were here my freshman year, they all wanted this for this team. Being able to carry on the things they showed us and now teach the freshmen now, I think, is something really special.”
Miami, which is coming off a fifth-place finish at the ACC Championships earlier this month, earned its spot at the NCAA Championships as one of 12 at-large teams in the 22-team field.
And the Hurricanes know the racing this weekend will be plenty fast, with 17 of the teams they’ll be competing against ranked the in the most recent CRCA Top 25.
They’ll get their first taste of that competition on Friday morning when the first varsity eight hits the water for its qualifying heat at approximately 10:24 a.m.
