Hurricanes Fall to Cal, 86-85
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team had its final shot at the buzzer fall short Saturday, dropping an 86-85 contest to Cal inside the Watsco Center.
After a back-and-forth first four minutes, Miami (17-5, 6-3 ACC) went on a 9-0 run to take a 19-12 advantage. The run was spurred by a pair of Shelton Henderson jumpers, a Salih Altuntas turnaround in the paint and was capped off by a three-point play from Timo Malovec.
Cal (16-6, 4-5 ACC) responded with a 14-3 run to take a 26-22 advantage forcing the Hurricanes to call timeout with 8:58 remaining. The Golden Bears led by as many as seven with 2:46 remaining before Miami was able to cut into the lead and trail by one, 45-44, at the half.
The Hurricanes were able to quickly grab the lead to start the second half and led by five, 58-53, with 15:42 remaining as Malik Reneau scored 10 of Miami’s first 18 points. Miami extended its lead to 11, utilizing an 8-0 run with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Cal chipped away and moved back in front, 82-81, on a corner three from Dai Dai Ames with 3:41 remaining. Reneau responded with an and-one to put Miami ahead 85-84 with 1:56 left, but the Golden Bears regained a one-point lead in the final seconds. With 5.8 seconds to go, Henderson drove the lane for the potential winner, but his layup rolled off the rim.
Reneau paced Miami with 24 points and was 12-of-14 from the free throw line. Henderson added 16 points while Tre Donaldson registered 14 points and five assists. Ernest Udeh Jr. tallied 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds while Dante Allen had 12.
Miami returns to action Saturday as the Hurricanes travel to take on Boston College at 2 p.m. The game will air on ACC Network and can be heard locally on WQAM.
