Miami Registers 85-76 Win at Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak as it led wire-to-wire in an 85-76 victory over Syracuse on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Hurricanes (16-4, 5-2 ACC) jumped out to a 9-0 lead early, holding the Orange scoreless for the first 3:46 of the game, forcing Syracuse (12-8, 3-4 ACC) to call a timeout. The Orange trimmed the lead to 11-8 before Miami embarked on a 9-2 run to lead 20-10 at the under-12 timeout. With the game tied at 27, the Hurricanes jumped on a 7-0 run before taking a 41-36 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Orange trimmed the lead down to two, 50-48, before Timo Malovec buried a pair of threes to help Miami extend the advantage back to seven. Shelton Henderson hit a pair of free throws and a layup before Tre Donaldson hit a 3-pointer, propelling Miami to a 13-point lead, 69-56, with 9:41 remaining. The Hurricanes continued to lead throughout the second half with the lead never getting lower than seven as Miami was able to break Syracuse’s full court press in the waning minutes of the game.
Reneau led the way offensive with 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds, marking his sixth double-double and 11th game with 20-or-more points this season. Henderson finished with 16 points with a team-high four assists as Donaldson and Tru Washington registered 16 and 14 points, respectively.
For the game, Miami shot 61.1% from the floor while scoring 52 points in the paint. From beyond the arc, the Hurricanes made seven of their 13 attempts while holding Syracuse to 29% from 3-point range.
Miami returns to the Watsco Center on Wednesday as the Hurricanes host Stanford at 9 p.m. The game will air on ACC Network and can be heard locally on WQAM.
