Canes Defeat FIU 2-0
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team scored two second-half goals to defeat FIU 2-0 Sunday night at Cobb Stadium.
The Canes improved to 5-1-1 and are off to their best start through seven games since 2011. The Panthers fell to 3-2-2.
Ciara Alarcon picked up a loose ball in the box in the 53rd minute and drilled a top shelf shot into the back of the net to give Miami the lead. It was her second goal of the season.
In the 84th minute, Crosby Nicholson doubled UM’s lead, settling a ball off a corner kick and notching her second goal of the season.
The Canes outshot the Panthers 16-5, and Emily Bredek and Atlee Olofson combined to give Miami its fourth clean sheet of the season.
“I am really pleased with the result and the group battling to earn another shutout here at Cobb Stadium,” head coach Ken Masuhr said. “Scoring goals is incredibly difficult and while the ones we scored weren’t pretty they fell into management of the details we talk about every day in our program. I am thrilled to start ACC play against last year’s national runner up and I know our team is looking forward to it as well.”
The Canes next hit the road to open ACC play at Wake Forest. Kickoff is 8 p.m. Wednesday on ACC Network Extra.
