Canes Beat FAU 4-0 in Home Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team defeated FAU 4-0 Thursday night in its home opener before a packed house at Cobb Stadium.

The Canes improved to 2-1, while the Owls fell to 0-2-1.

Miami dominated from the outset, outshooting FAU 16-4 and scoring four goals for the first time since a win over Southeastern Louisiana on September 5 of last season.

Junior midfielder Crosby Nicholson, a transfer from Kansas State, opened the scoring off a corner kick in the 31st minute to give Miami a 1-0 lead.

In the 52nd minute, midfielder Ciara Alarcon crossed a ball into the box and forward Brie Severns poked it home to double the Canes’ lead. Just 11 minutes later, freshman forward Noelle Simmons pounced on an FAU miscue near the goal and fired home her first career tally to push Miami’s lead to three goals.

Late in the second half, defender Éabha O’Mahony intercepted a ball in the box and fired a left-footed shot into the top of the net for the game’s final goal.

Goalkeepers Emily Bredek, Atlee Olofson and Lauren Rodriguez split duties in net and combined to earn the clean sheet – Miami’s second in three games.

The Canes return to Cobb Stadium this Sunday to host Jacksonville. Kickoff is 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
