Miami Falls in NCAA Singles Championships
WACO, Texas – Martin Katz and Raquel Gonzalez fell short in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Baylor University.
Beginning this year, individual competitions will occur in the fall rather than the spring season. It’s the start of a two-year pilot program, with team championships remaining in the spring.
This season was the first time either student-athlete had qualified for the tournament. In his senior year, Katz earned the bid after qualifying for the semifinals at the ITA Sectional Championships. Gonzalez punched her ticket after reaching the finals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships and extends Miami’s streak to 22 straight seasons with her qualification into the NCAA Individual Championships.
In the first round of competition, Katz went up against No. 15 Jay Friend of Arizona, where he dropped the match 7-5, 6-3, while Gonzalez fell 6-1, 6-1 to No. 12 Julia Fliegner of Michigan.
Miami will be back in action in January for the spring season. The full schedule will be released at a later time.
