Canali’s Second Half Goal, Stout Defensive Effort Propels Miami to 1-0 Win Over FAU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Giovana Canali scored her eighth goal of the season in the second half on a sensational shot, and the University of Miami soccer team (4-5-3) earned a 1-0 victory over Florida Atlantic (2-7-3) Sunday evening.

“Credit to FAU as they made it challenging for us, but as the field tilted and our press started to get deeper, I felt that we started to create the chances that would be the difference in the game,” said Head Coach Ken Masuhr. “It is fun watching this team compete and I am thrilled to post two shutouts on the weekend. I additionally want to thank all of our support staff that came together to add this match late in the schedule. They are some of the best in the business and we appreciate their dedication and willingness to allow our team a chance to compete.”

The Hurricanes traveled to FAU for their second match of the season, earning a 1-1 draw against the Owls in Boca Raton. This time, Miami came out victorious behind a stellar goal from Canali and a stout defensive effort from the back line.

Miami came out strong to commence the match, recording three shots within the first 10 minutes of play. The Canes recorded eight shots throughout the first half, five of which were on frame; but, they were unable to find the back of the net, as the two teams entered halftime tied 0-0.

Miami began the second half similar to how they started the first half, continuing to put significant pressure on the FAU back line and create quality offensive opportunities.

After a number of shots, the Canes broke through in the 55th minute. Ciara Alarcon played a pass to JJ Ndaw who found Canali just outside the box. Canali made a tremendous move to get by an FAU defender and then drilled a shot that flew past the goalkeeper, hit the crossbar, and bounced into the net, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Canali’s eighth of the season, as she continues to pace the Canes in that category.

Miami’s back line continued to dominate over the remainder of the contest, as they suffocated the Owls’ offensive attack, not allowing them to create any significant chances. The Canes went on to earn the impressive 1-0 victory.

Miami recorded 19 shots in the match, eight of which were on frame, while FAU compiled four shots, three of which were on frame.

The Canes will return to the field next Saturday, October 12, when they will travel to face Clemson.
