Miami Earns 2-1 Victory Over Missouri

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team secured their first victory of the Ken Masuhr era, earning a 2-1 win over Missouri. 

“I am so thrilled for this group,” said Masuhr. “We have consistently put in work every day and we knew at some point that the ball would bounce our way. Credit to our seniors and fifth-years who have continued to push and hold our standard. I could not be happier that this happened at home in front of a great crowd.” 

The Hurricanes (1-2-1) took complete control of the match midway through the first half and were rewarded with a goal by Giovana Canali late in the period, as they entered the break with a 1-0 lead over the Tigers (1-3-1). After a corner kick was cleared by Missouri, Tori Grambo played a ball into Canali near the middle of the box, and Canali fought off multiple Missouri defenders while maintaining possession, before placing a left-footed shot perfectly in the lower right corner of the goal. Cavani’s shot made it past the goalkeeper and slid just inside the post, marking her second goal of the season. 

Miami came out of the short break and picked up right where they left off, carrying over the  momentum they built going into the half. Just over three minutes into the period the Canes earned a free kick in a threatening position right outside of the box. Grambo took the kick and played a dangerous ball in the box that bounced off a Missouri player and found the back of the net, extending Miami’s lead to 2-0. 

The Canes continued to control the match; however, Missouri managed to score a goal off a corner kick in the 68th minute to trim Miam’s lead down to 2-1. 

With the Tigers building momentum after the goal, Miami displayed exceptional poise, as they maintained their composure and found their rhythm once again. The Canes’ backline played at a superb level over the remainder of the match, not allowing Missouri to create any significant chances, as Miami went on to earn the 2-1 victory. 

The Canes recorded six shots, four of which were on target, while Missouri tallied 12 shots, five of which were on frame. Miami goalkeeper Claireese Foley had a solid performance in the net, compiling three saves, including two in the second half. 

The Canes will return to the field this Sunday, as they are set to host FIU at Cobb Stadium with the match scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
