Miami Reaches ACC Quarterfinals with Sweep Over Virginia Tech
CARY, N.C. – The sixth-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team (11-6, 8-4 ACC) started the 2024 postseason with a 4-0 shutout Thursday night against No. 11-seeded Virginia Tech (9-13, 3-10 ACC) in the second round of the ACC Championship.
The Hurricanes are now 24-17 all-time in ACC Championship action, reaching at least the quarterfinals in all 19 of their tournament appearances.
Miami won a pair of doubles matches to open the round. At the top court, No. 29-ranked Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong dominated Katie Andreini and Dariya Radulova, 6-1, to grab Miami’s first duo win. Leonie Schuknecht and Antonia Balzert rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win four straight games and clinch the doubles point, 6-3, over Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng at the No. 2 spot.
Alexa Noel and Audrey Boch-Collins were up 5-3 on Charlotte Cartledge and Ozlem Uslu at court three when play was halted.
Miami maintained the momentum going into singles, with every player earning first-set victories. Alexa Noel, ranked No. 11, dominated the top court, 6-2, 6-0, over Ozlem Uslu to take the first singles win. On court six, Xinyi Nong also picked up an impressive win as she claimed the 6-2, 6-2 victory against Laima Frosch. To send Miami to the quarterfinals, No. 63 Isabella Pfennig took down Katie Andreini, 6-2, 6-1, on court two.
When play was halted, Antonia Balzert was up 6-4, 1-4 to Semra Aksu on court three, Leonie Schuknecht led Tamara Barad Itzhaki, 7-5, 1-1, on court four and No. 108 Audrey Boch-Collins was up 6-1 on Dariya Radulova on court five.
Miami is back in action Friday at 6 p.m. against third-seeded Florida State in the ACC Championship quarterfinals.
