M. Tennis Advances to Second Round of ACC Championship
CARY, N.C. – The No. 12-seeded University of Miami men’s tennis team (11-13, 2-10) advanced to the second round of the ACC Championships after a 4-0 shutout against No. 13-seeded Boston College (5-16, 0-12) on Wednesday afternoon.
On court two, Martin Katz and Antonio Prat delivered a dominant 6-2 win over Will Kasten and Matthew Overvelde to start off the day. Following right behind, Yannik Rahman and Nacho Serra Sanchez cliniched the opening point with a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot against Bennett Turner and Caleb Saltz.
No. 43-ranked Vladislav Melnic and Adrien Burdet were tied with No. 20 Juan Jose Bianchi and Jake Vassel at the top court when play was halted.
Miami kept the momentum going into singles. Martin Katz and Antonio Prat helped push the Canes to a 3-0 lead after finishing within seconds of each other. Katz, ranked No. 92, took down Juan Jose Bianchi, 6-3, 6-1, at the top court, while No. 125 Prat grabbed the court-two 6-1, 6-3 win over Caleb Saltz.
To clinch the match, Adrien Burdet defeated Mai Gao, 6-3, 6-4, on court four to advance Miami to the second round.
When play was halted, Vladislav Melnic was tied 4-6, 6-1 with Jake Vassel, Nacho Serra Sanchez was up 6-4, 3-1 on Will Kasten and Alejandro Arraya‘s score was 6-1, 2-5 with Matthew Overvelde.
The Hurricanes will meet No. 5-seeded North Carolina in the second round on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park.
