GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis doubles pair of Xinyi Nong and Isabella Pfennig claimed the ITA Southeast Regional doubles title on the University of Florida campus.
Beginning the tournament as a No. 5 seed, the duo started their run in the round of 64, where they took down Florida A&M’s Sierra Sandy and Veronica Rodriguez, 8-3. They then went on to face Given Roach and Kate Sharabura (GT) in the round of 32 and took the match, 8-6, to advance.
The Canes pair moved into the quarterfinals after defeating the No. 4-seeded Bente Spee and Sara Dahlstrom (UF), 8-4. Punching their ticket to the finals, Nong and Pfennig prevailed over Qavia Lopez and Malwina Rowinska (UF), 6-0, 0-6, 1-0 [10-8]. Finally, the duo matched up with FIU’s No. 51 Oyinlomo Quadre and Ekaterina Khayrutdinova and secured the title with a 6-7, 7-5, 11-9 victory.
In addition to the title, the Canes racked up 13 singles wins between Nong, Pfennig, Audrey Boch-Collins, Antonia Balzert and Leonie Schuknecht. Nong tallied the most victories with four, ultimately leading her to the consolation finals against Schuknecht.
Qualifying Canes will travel to San Diego, Calif., for the ITA National Fall Championships running from Nov. 1-5.
