Swim/Dive Tops Bearcats, 185-112, in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — The University of Miami women’s swimming & diving team topped host Cincinnati, 185-112, Friday afternooon at the Keating Aquatics Center.

Headlined by some impressive individual performances, the Hurricanes competed well in a meet which was finalized only 48 hours before the competition began. Miami (2-0) was originally scheduled to compete against Louisville and Notre Dame, but the meet was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns in the field.

Miami’s top entry in the 200-yard medley relay – comprised of Danika Huizinga, Emma Sundstrand, Giulia Carvalho and Jacey Hinton, cruised to a first-place finish in 1:43.35 to set the tone for the afternoon.

Emma Gullstrand (336.68) and Mia Vallee (309.83) dominated in the 1-meter springboard, while Millie Haffety (281.48) finished third.  It was more of the same in the 3-meter, with Vallee (336.68) taking top honors and Haffety (281.85) finishing second.

Huizinga added an individual win in the 100-yard backstroke (56.54) before Sundstrand (1:04.24) and Carvalho (1:04.29) finished 1-2 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Hurricanes impressed from there, with veteran Aino Otava (2:04.05) taking first in the 200-yard butterfly, Hinton winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.90) and Carmen San Nicolas (51.85) capturing the 100-yard freestyle just ahead of Hinton (51.87). Sydney Knapp (52.62) was third.

Carvalho (2:20.77) and Sundstrand (2:22.91) were the top-two finishers in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Zorry Mason won the 200-yard IM (2:06.81).
