Pfennig Rises in Singles and Doubles Rankings
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Isabella Pfennig of the University of Miami women’s tennis team ascended in both sets of individual rankings, as announced Wednesday afternoon by the ITA.
The Gauting, Germany, native is now a career-best No. 14 in the singles rankings, good for the third-highest mark by a first-year collegian. She capped the regular season with a gaudy 15-3 singles ledger that included a quartet of top-35 victories.
Pfennig, alongside fifth-year senior Estela Perez-Somarriba, also moved up nine spots in the ITA doubles rankings and now checks in at No. 25 overall. It is the third time this season the tandem has been ranked in the top 25.
Perez-Somarriba is also once again in the top 10 of the singles list, the 29th straight occurrence for her. The Madrid native is also in the top five for the 24th time during that span, as she checks in at fourth nationally.
Second-year freshman Diana Khodan and Maya Tahan round out the Hurricanes’ representatives on the individual lists, as they hold the No. 24 spot in the doubles rankings. It is the third consecutive top-25 mark for the duo.
On the new set of team lists, Miami dropped one spot in both ITA Coaches Poll and the computerized rankings despite a 6-1 home victory Friday against Florida Atlantic in the regular season finale. The Hurricanes place No. 20 and No. 24, respectively, in the rankings.
Miami begins ACC Championship action Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in Rome, Ga., where it squares off with Notre Dame at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.
