Perez-Somarriba, Pfennig Earn Third Straight ACC Distinctions
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Estela Perez-Somarriba and Isabella Pfennig of the University of Miami women’s tennis team once again earned ACC weekly accolades.
For the third consecutive time, Perez-Somarriba garnered ACC Player of the Week recognition and Pfennig received ACC Freshman of the Week plaudits. Unlike the last two occasions, both won their awards outright this time.
The pair aided No. 26 Miami (9-6, 6-4 ACC) to a 7-0 sweep Friday of then-No. 26 Wake Forest and a narrow 4-3 setback Sunday versus then-No. 11 NC State last week, both at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Perez-Somarriba, now a nine-time ACC Player of the Week in her dazzling career, defeated two top-12 opponents. The victories upped her record to 15-7 against such foes and moved her into sole possession of third place in ACC history with 153 singles wins. She topped then-No. 12 Carolyn Campana of Wake Forest, 7-5, 6-4, and then beat fifth-ranked Anna Rogers of NC State, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
Pfennig, who owns four ACC Freshman of the Week distinctions this season, logged two top-35 victories in Miami’s outings. First, she turned in a dominant 6-4, 6-2 showing against then-No. 32 Anna Campana of Wake Forest. Two days later, in a match she fought off nine set points in the opener, she downed then-No. 27 Alana Smith of NC State, 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 6-3, for the highest-ranked win of her young career.
The two players also competed together as a doubles duo, splitting their matches at the top spot. Their victory came against Wake Forest, as they defeated then-No. 23 Carolyn Campana and Eliza Omirou, 6-4, for the third top-25 decision of the spring.
Perez-Somarriba, Pfennig and their Miami teammates are back in action Friday at noon against Virginia Tech at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
