Miami Falls Against Syracuse
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Following a four-match road trip, the University of Miami soccer team returned to Cobb Stadium for the first of two home matches to close out the 2020 campaign.
In a back-and-forth contest against Syracuse, the Hurricanes came up short, 1-0, Thursday night.
In the sixth minute, Miami received the first shot on goal when freshman midfielder Annie Blair blasted an attempt from just outside the box, however the Orange goalkeeper, Lysianne Proulx, was able to make the stop.
10 minutes later, the Hurricanes received another opportunity when senior Tia Dupont sent a rocket toward Proulx, however the senior forward’s attempt missed just high of the cross bar.
Over a two-minute span, beginning in the 22nd minute, junior goalkeeper Tyler Speaks made back-to-back saves against Shannon Aviza and Mackenzie Vlachos.
Off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, Lindsey Brick sent the ball toward the head of Jenna Tivnan, who was able to give Syracuse the 1-0 advantage.
Out of the break, the Hurricanes looked to get the attack going when Dupont made a diving effort toward the ball in the box, but her attempt once again barely passed by the cross bar.
In the 53rd minute Blair collected her second shot on goal, but again Proulx was able to make the stop.
Overall, the Hurricanes outshot the Orange 7-3 in the second half, but the early goal by Syracuse proved to be the difference.
Miami will return to action on Sunday at 3:30 p.m., for the season finale against fifth-ranked Duke. Prior to the match, a quartet of Hurricanes will be honored for their years of dedication to The U: Morgan Asmussen, Lexi Castellano-Mugica, Dupont and Michelle Giamportone.
The match will be broadcast live on ACC Network, while also being aired on WVUM.
