Ableman Named ACC Men's Diving Coach of the Year

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second straight season, University of Miami head diving coach Randy Ableman has been recognized as Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Diving Coach of the Year.

Ableman, who hauled in the prestigious honor for the fourth time in the last six years (2015, 2017, 2019), helped guide his four-member men’s diving contingent to an impressive 2020 season, despite the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

Redshirt senior David Dinsmore earned his fourth straight ACC gold medal in the platform, leading the Miami men to a historic performance in Greensboro, N.C., at the 2020 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships.

“The thing that separates Randy from everyone else is the way he’s able to connect with his athletes on a personal level,” Dinsmore said. “I’ve been around a lot of coaches whose job is to coach and that’s where it ends.

“Randy takes it upon himself to make sure you’re not only the best athlete you can be, but also the best person you can be…that’s what separates him from the rest.”

The Hurricanes became the first team to sweep the podium in the platform and the only ACC team to sweep a diving podium since 2000. Junior Zach Cooper won an ACC silver medal while freshman Max Flory won his first ACC bronze medal. Freshman Brodie Scapens was fourth.

Under the direction of Ableman, in his 31st season at the helm of the program, the Hurricanes repeated the feat at NCAA Zone ‘B’ qualifiers in Athens, Ga.

Miami captured the top-four finishes and all four divers qualified for the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, which were set for March 26-29 in Indianapolis.

Ableman was named ACC Women’s Diving Coach of the Year in 2013, 2018 and 2019.
