Men’s Tennis Sweeps Weekly ACC Accolades
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Following a perfect start to conference action, the University of Miami men’s team swept ACC weekly accolades, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.
Sophomore Francisco Bastias has been tabbed ACC co-Player of the Week, while Bastias and junior Adria Soriano Barrera have been recognized as the conference’s Doubles Team of the Week.
Bastias’ Player of the Week achievement marks the second of his career, as the Mendoza, Argentina, native previously garnered the award on Feb. 26, 2019.
Going a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles matches this past weekend, the sophomore led Miami to back-to-back ranked conference victories, the first time Miami has accomplished this feat since 2008. Playing No. 2 singles against then-No. 45 Clemson, he captured Miami’s third point of the day with a, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, straight-set victory over Matteo Vialmin. Two-days later, Bastias clinched the 4-2 victory over then-No. 38 Georgia Tech with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, win against Cole Gromley.
Meanwhile, the nation’s 53rd-ranked doubles pair of Bastias and Soriano Barrera earned the program’s third doubles team honor over the past two season, as Soriano Barrera garners the accolade for the third time in his career, while Bastias earns the achievement for the second time.
The duo got things rolling against Clemson with a 6-3 win over Jacob Jahn and Mike Agee, as Miami went on to earn the team shutout, 7-0. Two days later, the Hurricanes’ tandem once again secured an advantageous doubles point against No. 38 Georgia Tech, earning another 6-3 triumph, this time over Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin.
The Hurricanes will return to action on March 8, when they host No. 15 Florida State at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at noon.
