Perez-Somarriba Ranked First Nationally
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is the top-ranked singles player in the country, as announced Wednesday night by the ITA.
This is the second time in the senior’s stellar career she has been ranked No. 1, joining the May 1, 2019, release in advance of her run to the NCAA title. The Madrid native is 22-2 this season, including a perfect 8-0 in spring competition.
Two teammates join once again her in the national singles rankings, with sophomore Daevenia Achong placing No. 72 overall and freshman Selma Cadar holding the No. 96 spot. This is the highest ranking of Achong’s career, eight spots above her prior top mark she set in the fall 2019 preseason rankings.
The Hurricanes are also represented on the doubles list, with Achong and Cadar coming in at No. 59 nationally.
In the team rankings, which were computer-generated for the first time in 2020, Miami holds the No. 27 position. Thirteen of the ACC’s 14 teams are ranked, with three in the top four, six in the top 11, nine in the top 30 and 12 in the top 40.
Miami resumes play Friday at noon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center against No. 35 Virginia Tech in its first of three home matches this weekend.
