Men's Tennis Wraps up Play at Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team capped the final day of the Miami Spring Invite Sunday in what was the last tune up before dual match play begins on Friday.

Over the three day weekend, the Hurricanes combined to go 11-13 in singles and 6-6 in doubles against the defending national champions and second-ranked Texas, No. 19 Georgia and Wisconsin.

Opening Sunday with doubles, redshirt senior Dane Dunlap and junior Bojan Jankulovski shined against the Badgers’ Robin Parts and Gabriel Huber, cruising to a 6-1 victory.

Moving on to singles, William Grattan-Smith collected his second straight singles triumph, running away with a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set win over Texas’ Chih Chi Huang.

In the final two matches to conclude, Jankulovski and sophomore Francisco Bastias looked to each capture straight-set triumphs.

Squaring off against Texas’ Jacob Bullard, the Skopje, Macedonia, native won the final three games of the second set to earn a 6-2, 7-5 victory.

In a back-and-forth opening set against Elliot Spizzirri of Texas, Bastias fought back from a 5-2 first set deficit to force a tiebreaker. In the breaker, the sophomore etched out a 7-4 win, before ultimately claiming the match, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Battling No. 13 Christian Sigsgaard for the third time in the past 364 days, junior Adria Soriano Barrera, ranked No. 53 in the ITA singles rankings, jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. However, the Longhorns’ senior battled back to force a third set.

In a hard fought final set, the Barcelona, Spain, native came up short, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

Battling No. 53 Siem Woldeab, Dunlap fell 1-6, 2-6, while junior Tatsuki Shimamoto dropped his match against Cleeve Harper, 0-6, 4-6.

Playing on courts 7 and 8, Stephen Madonia fell against Nevin Arimilli, 2-6, 2-6, while Pablo Aycart Joya lost against Evin McDonald, 2-6, 0-6.

The Hurricanes will return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center Friday at 11 a.m., when they host the College of Charleston in the regular season opener.
