Swimming in Third After Two Days in Kansas

TOPEKA, Kansas — The Miami Hurricanes swimming team put together another strong day of competition Saturday on Day 2 of the Kansas Invite, remaining in third place in the multi-team invitational.

Junior Chandler Sensibaugh (4:26.22, fifth) and freshman Aino Otava (4:26.83, sixth) both competed in the ‘A’ final of the 400-yard IM to open the night’s individual finals.

The Hurricanes posted two of the top-five finishes in the ‘A’ final of the 100-yard butterfly, with junior Alaina Skellett (54.86) taking third and sophomore Zorry Mason (55.05) taking fifth.

Junior Sydney Knapp, one of Miami’s top point-scorers on the weekend, took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.52) after finishing with the top time in the morning’s preliminary round (1:48.77). Otava’s time of 1:51.35 in the ‘B’ final of the same event also scored points for the Hurricanes.

Mason finished sixth in the ‘A’ final of the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.42) while Skellett was third in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in a time of 54.68.

The Hurricanes’ top entry in the 800-yard freestyle relay – comprised of Knapp, Otava, senior Claire McGinnis and junior Carmen San Nicolas – finished second in a time of 7:25.31 to cap another impressive day.

Miami widened its lead in third place with 369 points, well ahead of North Texas and trailing just Iowa State and Kansas in the seven-team meet.

The Kansas Invite concludes Sunday.
