W. Tennis Meets No. 33 Washington State in NCAA Opener

STILLWATER, Okla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team begins its 24th consecutive NCAA Team Championship appearance Friday afternoon.

No. 19 Miami (18-7, 9-5 ACC) takes on No. 33 Washington State (19-10, 3-7 P12) at 3 p.m. ET at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. Live video can be found HERE, while live stats will be available HERE.

The victor of Friday’s match advances to face either the host, Oklahoma State, or Central Arkansas. The Cowgirls, both ranked and seeded No. 15, meet the Bears Friday at 6 p.m. ET.

The Hurricanes have never before played Washington State in either the postseason or the regular season.

Miami enters the NCAA Team Championship with a 53-33 all-time record in the tournament and is making its 34th appearance in the 38-year history of the event. That ledger includes a 26-27 mark in neutral site matches and a 3-3 tally in the state of Oklahoma.

The Hurricanes have reached the Round of 32 each of the past 17 years, dating back to head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ first at the helm, and made the Sweet 16 in 12 of the last 13.

Miami has one player in the Oracle/ITA singles ranking, as junior Estela Perez-Somarriba sits atop the list. The two-time reigning ACC Player of the Year took over the lead position Wednesday.

In doubles, the Hurricanes are also represented in the top 15, as freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan check in at a season-best No. 13 nationally.

Washington State’s 19 victories thus far in 2019 are tied for its second-most in a campaign in program history.

The Cougars, who are in the NCAA Team Championship for the first time since 2012, have one ranked singles player, with Michaela Bayerlova placing No. 42 in the country. In doubles, Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato form the team’s lone ranked pair, coming in at No. 22 nationally.
