Soriano and Bastias Garner All-ACC Recognition
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After capping the regular season earning the program’s highest seed at the ACC Championship since 2011, a pair of University of Miami men’s tennis student-athletes earned All-ACC recognition, as announced Thursday by the conference office.
Sophomore Adria Soriano Barrera earned second team accolades for the second straight season, while freshman Francisco Bastias was tabbed to the third team.
Competing at the top of the Hurricanes’ singles lineup, Soriano Barrera boasts a team-high 21 wins during his sophomore campaign and a 13-9 mark during the spring. The Barcelona, Spain, native owns six spring victories against ranked opponents, including a pair of top-25 triumphs over then-fourth-ranked Christian Sigsgaard of Texas and No. 21 Alexis Galarneau of NC State.
Battling then-No. 75 Nick Stachowiak of Duke on March 24, the sophomore secured a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) win to clinch a 4-3 comeback victory against the Blue Devils.
Soriano Barrera, who ranks No. 32 nationally, earned both ACC Player of the Week (Jan. 22) and Doubles Team of the Week (March 12) honors. He will now look to see his name in the NCAA Singles Championship press release, set to be announced April 30 at 6 p.m.
Joining the sophomore on the 27-member list, Bastias earned third team honors following a rookie campaign that saw him work his way up to the No. 2 position in the singles lineup.
This season, Bastias holds a 19-12 singles mark. On March 15, the freshman secured a straight-set victory over Tristan McCormick, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6), to clinch his first career dual match, a 4-3 decision over then-No. 11 Notre Dame.
After leading the Hurricanes to their first 2-0 start in conference action since 2011, Bastias became the first Miami freshman to earn ACC player of the Week since Carl Sundberg did so on April 8, 2008.
In doubles, Bastias mostly teamed up with fellow classmate Franco Aubone at the No. 3 position, as the duo went 13-2 as a tandem and 8-2 in conference action. Overall, the Mendoza, Argentina, native boasts a 21-8 doubles mark.
As a team, Miami (17-10, 7-5 ACC) sits at No. 32 in the national poll, after reaching the ACC Championship quarterfinals for the first time since 2011.
The Hurricanes will now await their seeding and placement in the NCAA Team Championship, with the selection show scheduled to air April 29 at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com.
