Achong Wins ACC Player and Freshman of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. For the second time this season, Daevenia Achong of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is both the ACC Player of the Week and the ACC Freshman of the Week.

Achong, who shared overall honors with sixth-ranked Alexa Graham of North Carolina, also took home both accolades Jan. 22. This is her third ACC Freshman of the Week distinction, as she also received the plaudit Jan. 29.

A Geleen, Netherlands, native, Achong went 4-0 across singles and doubles action last week, helping No. 27 Miami (13-5, 6-4 ACC) to 6-1 victories over both Clemson and then-No. 14 Wake Forest.

In Friday’s matchup versus the Tigers, Achong teamed with senior Daniella Roldan for the first top-10 doubles triumph by a Miami duo since April 23, 2016. The pair tallied a 6-3 victory against then-fourth-ranked Fernanda Navarro and Marie-Alexandre Leduc to clinch the opening point.

Achong followed up the big win in doubles by registering her second-career ranked singles decision, a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over No. 125 Leduc.

In Sunday’s contest against Wake Forest, Achong and Roldan, who jumped to No. 17 nationally Tuesday, again recorded a ranked victory. The duo topped then-No. 38 Chandler Carter and Emma Davis, 6-2.

To conclude her unblemished week, Achong cruised past Anna Ulyashchenko, 6-2, 6-1, in singles play at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Achong and the Hurricanes return to the court Friday at 2 p.m. with a matchup against No. 41 Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
