Canes Track Closes Out Hurricane Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University Miami track and field program produced a solid outing to close out the opening weekend of the outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational.
Miami head coach Amy Deem was happy with the way her team performed with plenty of the Canes gaining early experience during the opener.
“The coaches and I sat down earlier this week and had goals that we wanted to accomplish, and we were able to do that today,” Deem said. “We had some good openers with Alfreda Steele and we got the 4×1 on the track. We’re really getting ready for the next few weekends, but I think what we set out to accomplish was done today.”
Junior transfer Raheem Chambers came out flying in his opening outdoor meet as a Cane, finishing with the fastest collegiate time at 20.98 seconds in the 200m dash. Chambers’ time ranks as the third-fastest time in program history. Freshman Tyrees Moulton came in close behind Chambers with a time of 21.40. Isaiah Taylor, Christopher Moree and Eric Labartor also competed in the event.
Miami’s A 4x400m relay team finished first, running a blazing time of 3:09.69. The A team was made up of Moulton, freshman Davonte Fuller, freshman Thomas Burns and junior McKinly Brown.
In the field events, sophomore Hasani Knight put on a show in the men’s triple jump, finishing second with a mark of 15.06m, which ranks second all-time in UM history. Senior Andreas Christodoulou finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.88m. Christodoulou also competed in the men’s 100m along with Moree.
The Miami women also finished the first outdoor meet of the season winning the 4×100 relay with a time of 43.86 seconds. Senior Carolyn Brown led the way, followed by junior Alfreda Steele, sophomore Symone Mason and sophomore Amuru Patterson.
Steele also competed in the women’s 100m dash, finishing second with a time of 11.37 seconds. Freshman Tia Murray also competed in the event, running a time of 12.56 seconds.
The 2018 ACC Outdoor Track MVP and 200m dash champion, Mason, ran the fastest collegiate time at 23.49 seconds. Patterson ran the second-fastest collegiate time at 23.79 seconds, while Murray finished at 26.22.
Senior Anna Runia ran a solid 400m dash, as she was the lone Cane to compete in the event and finished second with a time of 55.04 seconds. Runia was joined by Brown, Steele and Patterson in the 4x400m relay and finished second with a time of 3:45.31.
The Miami women were well represented in the field events, as Darlene Charles won the women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.65m and recorded a mark of 5.13m in the long jump. Junior Peyton Russell finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.17m.
The Canes will return to its home track next weekend on March 25 as they host the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge. Miami will host USC, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Ohio State next weekend at the second-ever event. The five programs are all led by female head coaches and will make its way to Coral Gables after the Trojans of USC first hosted it last season.
