W. Tennis Meets Third-Ranked Duke in ACC Home Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team will play its first conference home match of the season this weekend.

No. 18 Miami (6-2, 0-1 ACC) is set to take on third-ranked Duke Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Live stats for the affair will be available HERE.

Duke, the top-ranked team on the Hurricanes’ schedule thus far, is the fifth top-25 foe Miami will meet in a span of six matches, including the fourth in the top 20.

The Hurricanes are 12-17, including 6-5 at home, in their all-time series with Duke, which dates back to 1987. In the most recent meeting, the Blue Devils logged a 4-1 triumph on April 28, 2018 in the ACC Championship semifinals in Cary, N.C.

Miami heads into Sunday’s contest with one nationally-ranked singles player, as junior Estela Perez-Somarriba places seventh. The Hurricanes have no doubles pairs on the Oracle/ITA list.

Duke sports an 8-1 (1-0 ACC) record thus far in 2019 after reaching the NCAA Final Four last year. The Blue Devils feature five ranked singles players: No. 18 Meible Chi, No. 22 Maria Mateas, No. 26 Kelly Chen, No. 108 Kaitlyn McCarthy and No. 123 Ellyse Hamlin.

In doubles, Hamlin and McCarthy form the No. 18 pair in the country, while Mateas and Margaryta Bilokin come in at No. 56.

After its contest against the Blue Devils, Miami hits the road for Wexford, Pa., where it will play Pittsburgh March 1 at 1 p.m.
