Perez-Somarriba Rises to Fourth, Ito/Shirokova to No. 33
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team has both a singles player and a doubles pair featured in the first Oracle/ITA individual rankings of 2019, as announced Wednesday.
On the singles list, junior Estela Perez-Somarriba jumped three places to fourth in the country. It is one spot shy of the highest mark of her career, third, which she has held on five occasions.
The Madrid native is the highest-ranked player in the ACC, as well as the highest-ranked junior in the country. Perez-Somarriba is 18-4 thus far in 2018-19, including 8-3 versus ranked foes.
Meanwhile, in doubles, Miami’s lone ranked pair of junior Yuna Ito and sophomore Ulyana Shirokova ascended 18 spots to No. 33 nationally. It is the highest ranking as a Hurricane for both players.
Ito and Shirokova own a 10-5 record as a duo in 2018-19, with a pair of victories over top-50 opponents.
No. 17 Miami (5-1) resumes play Sunday at 1 p.m., when it hosts No. 20 Texas Tech at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
