Canes Set to Compete at UCF Challenge

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami golf team returns to action on Sunday when the team travels to Orlando to begin competition in the UCF Challenge. This year’s event will take place at the Par 72, 6,349-yard Eagle Creek Golf Club.

The tournament will consist of 54 holes over a three-day stretch, with tee times set to begin at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday. Action will continue Monday, with the final round scheduled for Tuesday morning

A quintet of Hurricanes, graduate student Claudia de Antonio, juniors Macarena Aguilera and Renate Grimstad, sophomore Kristyna Frydlova and freshman Anna Backman, will make the trip with Miami grouping up with student-athletes from Purdue and Michigan State.

Live results will be available through Golfstat.com.

The Hurricanes will look to earn the UCF Challenge crown for the third straight year, after placing first in both 2017 and 2018. Last season Dewi Weber and Grimstad secured the top-two spots in the individual standings, with Grimstad closing out the tournament with a 215. Overall, the team finished 10 strokes ahead of second-place Auburn with a three-day total of 868.

Last week, the Canes opened the spring season at the Florida Challenge with a second-place team finish, including a pair of top-10 individual performances by Frydlova and Backman.

Leading the way for Miami, Frydlova tied for third in Tampa, Fla., scoring two-under par and carding four birdies. Making her collegiate debut after joining the Hurricanes at the start of the 2019 spring semester, Backman tallied a trio of birdies to tie for sixth with a score of 73.

Miami will go up against a strong field at the UCF Challenge which includes UCF, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Illinois, Iowa State, Kennesaw State, Kent State, Michigan State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Purdue, SMU., Tulane, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.
