Atherley Wins ACC Field Performer of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami’s Michelle Atherley was named ACC Women’s Indoor Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday.

Atherley won the women’s pentathlon at the Texas Tech Classic, posting the nation’s second best score with 4,292 points. The senior finished first in four of the five events, while recording personal bests in both the high jump with a mark of 1.74m and in the long jump with a 6.01m mark.

“It was a great opener in the pentathlon for Michelle,” head coach Amy Deem said. “She had great training in the fall and I think it is really setting her up to have a great season. The great thing about her performance at Texas Tech is, even though she had some personal bests there, there is still room for improvement and room for her to increase her scores as the season progresses.”

The North Port, Fla., native started the pentathlon with a first place finish in the 60m hurdles, recording a time of 8.39 seconds. Atherley’s second place finish in the shot put, combined with her two personal bests set the 2018 ACC Outdoor Field MVP up for a time of 2:17.98 time in the 800m. Atherley finished a full 10 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
