Men's Tennis Wraps up First Day of Miami Spring Invite

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opened the spring season with a strong performance at the Miami Spring Invite, closing out the afternoon 8-5, including 3-1 in doubles action at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
 
The Hurricanes began the day facing off against Wisconsin in singles action, going a combined 5-3 against the Badgers. Freshman Francisco Bastias, ranked No. 97 nationally, cruised past Leonard Soha, 6-0, 6-4, to collect his first victory of the spring.
 
No. 21 Adria Soriano Barrera and Osgar O’Hoisin found themselves in a back-and-forth battle, with the Miami sophomore coming out on top, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. On the adjacent court, No. 35 Bojan Jankulovski outlasted Jesper Freimuth, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
 
Meanwhile, freshman Kaya Gore notched his first-career singles victory, taking down Daniel Nuzhny. The Izmir, Turkey, native secured the opening set 6-1, before falling in the second, 0-6. In the final set, Gore clinched the win, 6-1, 0-6, 6-2.
 
After Gore downed Nuzhny, William Grattan-Smith completed an impressive 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Alan Sweet, earning his first spring victory as a Hurricane.
 
In a thriller, redshirt junior Dane Dunlap fell short against Chase Colton, as the duo split a pair of tiebreakers, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6). Colton later closed out the match with a 6-4 third-set victory.
 
Freshman Franco Aubone also came up short in a three-set thriller, falling to Robert Krill, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 3-6, while sophomore Tatsuki Shimamoto fell against Jared Pratt, 2-6, 3-6.
 
In doubles action, Miami squared off against Ole Miss and quickly earned victories on Courts 1, 2 and 3.
 
Dunlap and Aubone were the first Miami duo to secure a decision, as the pair dominated Filip Kraljevic and Karlo Kranic, 8-4. Moments later, Bastias and Jankulovski topped Simon Junk and Jan Soren Hain, 8-4.
 
Additionally, Soriano and Gore earned a hard-fought victory over Fabian Fallert and Tim Sandkaulen, 8-7 (7-3).
 
In the final doubles match of the afternoon, Shimamoto and Pablo Aycart Joya came up short against Sebastian Rios and Cotter Wilson, 7-8 (4-7).
 
In the final match of the day, Aycart Joya dropped a third set tiebreaker against Texas’ Nevin Arimilli, 6-3, 3-6, 0-1 (5-10)
 
The Miami Spring Invite will resume Saturday at 9 a.m., with the Hurricanes playing eighth-ranked Texas in singles and Wisconsin in doubles.
