Swimming Posts Strong Saturday at Bruno Invite
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Miami swimming and diving team enjoyed a strong second day of competition at the Bruno Invite on the Brown University campus Saturday.
A night after breaking her own school record in the 200-yard IM, freshman Zorry Mason opened the night’s final rounds with the top time in the 100-yard butterfly (53.92) to pick up the Hurricanes’ first win of the evening. Freshman Maria Artigas Fernandez took fifth in the 400 IM (4:21.79), shedding time from her morning preliminary round (4:21.96).
Junior Manon Viguier kept the early positive momentum flowing with a second-place time of 1:48.56 in the 200-yard freestyle, as she was just edged out by Villanova’s Alexa Fabbri (1:48.51). VIguier had the morning’s top time in preliminaries (1:48.87).
Sophomore Alaina Skellett delivered an impressive performance in the 100-yard backstroke (55.23) to take second place in the finals after finishing fourth in preliminaries (55.95).
The Hurricanes’ top entry in the 200-yard medley relay, comprised of Skellett, Mason, freshman Maddie Lauther and Viguier, finished the event in third place with a time of 1:42.70.
Miami closed the night with a time of 7:26.23 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Carmen San Nicolas Martinez, junior Claire McGinnis, Viguier and sophomore Sydney Knapp combined to take fifth.
The Bruno Invite concludes Sunday from the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on the Brown University campus.
