Miami Posts Strong Scores in NCAA GSR

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami student-athletes continued their strong work in the classroom this past year, posting a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 90 percent, as announced Wednesday by the NCAA. The Hurricanes’ GSR is higher than the national average of 87 percent.

“I continue to be impressed by our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff,” Director of Athletics Blake James said.  “We are extremely proud of them for once again helping us exceed the Graduation Success Rate national average. Our commitment to academic achievement here at the University of Miami is unwavering and our outstanding student-athletes lead the way.”

Seven Miami programs posted perfect scores of 100 percent in the GSR: men’s basketball, men’s cross country/track and field, golf, men’s diving, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis and volleyball. The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2008-09 to 2011-12, comprising more than 110,000 student-athletes.
The men’s basketball program earned its first perfect GSR rating, coming in 19 percent above the NCAA average of 81 percent.

The Miami men’s diving and women’s golf teams continued their consistent perfection with 100 percent GSR for the 14th consecutive year.

The Hurricane volleyball and women’s swimming and diving programs also continued their string of success in the classroom, earning a 100 percent GSR for the seventh straight season.

Rounding out Miami’s perfect GSR numbers in 2018 were the soccer and men’s cross country and track and field programs. The Hurricanes soccer program earned a perfect rating for the third consecutive season, while the men’s cross country and track and field programs earned a second straight perfect mark.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our Hurricane student-athletes, coaches and staff members,” Senior Associate AD for Academic Services David Wyman said. “We are proud of our graduation success rate and all of our student-athletes who continue to strive for excellence.”

In addition, the Miami baseball (83 percent), women’s basketball (93 percent) and football (82 percent) programs all posted GSR totals above the NCAA average.

The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents suggesting that graduation data more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today.  The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained.  The NCAA began compiling the GSR with the entering class of 1995.
