PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – For the second time in three years, a member of the University of Miami women’s tennis team won the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships singles consolation draw.
After Sinead Lohan did so in 2016, junior Estela Perez-Somarriba earned her own medal Sunday with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Wisconsin’s Sara Castellano at the Riviera Tennis Club.
“Estela did what she had to do when she had to do it and was very coachable [in regards] to making changes when she needed them,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “Her mental game is improving every day and she is believing in the routines more and more.”
Facing a player who tallied three top-20 victories in the past two days, Perez-Somarriba dominated the first set and then narrowly took the second to move to 8-1 this fall.
Perez-Somarriba has now won a title in each of her fall competitions, as she took home the Oracle ITA Masters singles main draw trophy last month in Malibu, Calif.
“She needs to continue to understand the adjustments [that need] to be made and make the right mental choices when playing, to conquer the next level,” Vallverdu said. “Proud of the way she competed and excited to continue to work [with her].”
After dropping her first match in Pacific Palisades, Perez-Somarriba won three matches in three days to take the back draw title. All three triumphs were in straight sets and she lost three-plus games in just two of the six she played.
The next time members of the Miami roster will be in action is Oct. 12-14 for the Bedford Cup, set to take place at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
