Shimamoto and Aycart Capture Doubles Title
ORLANDO, Fla. – In Sunday’s early morning showdown, University of Miami men’s tennis sophomores Pablo Aycart Joya and Tatsuki Shimamoto cruised to an 8-1 victory over Stetson’s Louis Gorregues and Dennis Moses to capture the Flight 2 doubles title at the Bedford Cup.
Overall, the tandem went 3-0 over the three-day weekend at the USTA National Campus, hosted by UCF.
In singles action, Shimamoto took care of business in the Flight 1 consolation draw picking up two victories on Sunday.
In his first match of the afternoon, the sophomore topped South Florida’s Sean Burnette, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Facing the Bulls’ Tobias Sonne in his final match of the tournament, Shimamoto fell behind early, 0-6, before regrouping in the second set, 6-3. He then outdueled Sonne in the third set tiebreaker, 12-10.
In a back-and-forth battle against Moses, Aycart came up short in the third set tiebreaker, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 12-14.
Facing FAU’s Ignacio Garcia, freshman Kaya Gore fell, 3-6, 4-6.
