Hurricanes Wrap Up Day 2 in Tuscaloosa
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A quartet of University of Miami men’s tennis student-athletes wrapped up their second day at the Crimson Tide Four-In-The-Fall Championships. Saturday’s matches were played at the University of Alabama Tennis Center and Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Pairing up in the Houndstooth Doubles Draw, sophomore’s William Grattan-Smith and Tatsuki Shimamoto picked up their first win as teammates, topping Tennessee’s Sean Presson and Luca Wiedenmann, 8-7 (7-2). In the final doubles match, the UM duo came up short against Mohamed Abdel-Aziz and Karol Paluch of Rice, 6-8.
Redshirt junior Dane Dunlap and freshman Franco Aubone opened the morning in the Crimson Doubles Draw semifinal against Tulane’s Akos Kotorman and Tim Ruetzel. The Canes duo dropped the match, 3-8. In the consolation round, Dunlap and Aubone fell to Alabama’s Patrick Kaukovalta and Riccardo Roberto, 4-8.
In singles action, the Hurricanes went a combined 2-1, while Grattan-Smith advanced by default.
Battling Tennessee’s Wiedenmann, Dunlap improved to 2-1 this fall with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) straight-set victory. Following the win, the redshirt junior will face Alabama’s Kaukovalta on Sunday in the Crimson Singles Draw consolation final.
Shimamoto picked up his first singles victory of the 2018-19 season, when he knocked off Rice’s Adam Oscislawski, 6-2, 6-0.
Looking for his first win as a collegiate athlete, Aubone dropped the opening set against Rice’s Paluch, 4-6. The Miami freshman rebounded in the second set, 6-4, to force a third set tiebreaker. However, Paluch earned the victory, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
The three-day event will conclude on Sunday with the last round of singles set to start at 10 a.m.
