Pair of Divers Selected to All-ACC Academic Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – A pair of University of Miami divers were selected to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Swimming & Diving Team, the conference office announced Thursday.
Senior Wally Layland and redshirt freshman Alicia Blagg were both recognized by the conference for outstanding performances in the classroom and on the boards in 2017-18.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Layland was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the second straight year. An Orlando, Fla., native, Layland earned the third Honorable Mention All-America honors of her career with a top-16 finish in the 1-meter springboard at the 2018 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Layland also captured a silver medal at the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships in the 3-meter springboard.
Competing as a Hurricane for the first time after redshirting 2016-17, Blagg won a gold medal in the 3-meter springboard at the 2018 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships in her first trip to the competition. A Great Britain native with extensive international experience, Blagg won a silver medal in the synchronized 3-meter springboard at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, in April.
Blagg represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
