Perez-Somarriba, Shirokova Sweep ACC Weekly Honors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Two members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team earned weekly recognitions from the ACC, as announced Tuesday evening by the conference.
Estela Perez-Somarriba was named the ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season, while Ulyana Shirokova garnered her first ACC Freshman of the Week distinction.
A sophomore ranked No. 18 in the nation in singles, Perez-Somarriba won both of her matches at the top spot last week, aiding Miami to a 4-0 win against Longwood and a 5-2 triumph versus No. 16 Florida State.
The Madrid native downed Longwood’s Marija Venta, 6-1, 6-0, and beat No. 54 Carla Touly of Florida State, 6-2, 6-3. She dropped just six games across the two matches and improved to 12-0 on the spring, including 4-0 against top-80 opponents.
“Estela is one of the hardest working athletes I have ever had the pleasure of coaching,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Hats off to her. In my eyes, she deserves any award she gets.”
Shirokova was the lone Hurricane to go 4-0 across singles and doubles on the week. Both of her doubles wins came with Dominika Paterova and the No. 2 position and she moved to 9-2 in spring matches.
In singles, Shirokova did not lose a game versus Julia Candiotto of Longwood, notching a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. The Ufa, Russia, native also defeated Florida State’s Ariana Rahmanparast, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, upping her spring mark to 10-1.
“I’m very happy for Uly. She is moving in the right direction,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We are looking forward to continued improvement from her.”
