Shakima Wimbley Helps USA Win 4x400m World Title
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Shakima Wimbley’s inaugural appearance at the IAAF World Indoor Championships ended with a gold medal.
One day after earning a silver medal in the 400m, Wimbley helped the United States win the women’s 4x400m relay final in 3:23.86, setting a championship record and running the second-fastest time ever. The time also set a new American record.
Quanera Burks opened up the United States’ 4x400m relay with an impressive two laps around the track at Arena Birmingham before passing the baton to Georganne Moline, who maintained the U.S. lead before handing the baton to Wimbley.
The former Hurricane superstar held off a charging Anastasia Le-Roy of Jamaica and gave the baton to Courtney Okolo, who finished off the record-setting relay performance and secured the world championship for the Americans.
Wimbley has now won three medals at the IAAF World Championships. A year ago, Wimbley won gold at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships as part of the United States’ 4x400m relay team.
Wimbley is one of four Hurricanes in action at the 2018 IAAF World Championships. The Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahoure won a gold medal in the 60m on Friday, while Canada’s Alysha Newman finished sixth in the women’s pole vault and fellow Canadian Kelsey Balkwill competed in the 400m.
The IAAF World Championships are held at Arena Birmingham, a multi-purpose venue that has hosted more world championships than any other arena in Europe, and more than 30 different sports events in its history, including multiple global events such as the Indoor Grand Prix and the IAAF World Indoor Championships 2003.
