SAACthlete of the Week – Brooke McDermott
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s volleyball player Brooke McDermott is an active member in the Hurricanes’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. See how Miami SAAC has helped this Hurricane senior prepare for life after graduation in this week’s SAACthlete of the Week.
Why did you decide to be a part of SAAC?
“I decided to join SAAC because I saw a great opportunity in being able to represent my team and school on a much larger scale. I appreciate and take pride in the role of representing UM on and off the court.”
What is your favorite memory from SAAC?
“My favorite memory from SAAC has to be when I took part in the pen pal program. Sending letters back and forth with kids from elementary schools was so rewarding. Getting to know my pen pal more and more each week was something I always looked forward to.”
Why did you pick UM?
“Being from Miami it was an easy pick, I’ve dreamed of this since I was a kid.”
What is your favorite moment in your sport so far as a Hurricane?
“Some of my favorite moments have definitely been coaching volleyball camps over the summer. Knowing how much the younger girls look up to us is such a privilege, and a true honor to uphold. I enjoy setting good examples for them and seeing them progress.”
What skills have you gained from being in SAAC or through the many developing events?
“Being in SAAC has definitely helped me build the confidence and given me the opportunity to speak out and be a voice for not only my team, but also female athletes in general. I have met so many amazing people through SAAC and have been given so many awesome opportunities to learn and grow as a person, an athlete and a leader.”
How has your team benefitted from having a SAAC?
“I think my team has benefited from having SAAC because I serve as a liaison between them and the outside athletic community. I love being able to represent them and act as their voice.”
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your college career and how did you overcome it?
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my college career has been tearing my ACL and having to recover from my surgery, missing out on a year of volleyball. I overcame it with the help of my faith and the amazing people around me.”
What is a fun fact about you?
“I played badminton in high school.”
