Swimming Wraps Up Day 1 at Big Al Open
PRINCETON, N.J. — The Miami Hurricanes swimming team wrapped up Day 1 at the Big Al Open in fourth place, finishing with 117 points on the first day of competition at the DeNunzio Pool on the Princeton campus.
Sophomore Manon Viguier opened Friday night’s finals with the top finish in the “B” final of the 500-yard freestyle. Viguier, who posted a time of 4:58.02 in the morning’s preliminaries to qualify for a second swim, cut nearly seven seconds off her time (4:51.36) in the finals.
One of Miami’s top contributors in her first season at The U, freshman Annie Kyriakidis continued her hot start with one of Miami’s top finishes of the night. Kyriakidis touched the wall in the finals of the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.26, good for fourth place overall in the field.
Junior Roxanne Yu (2:05.30) and Viguier (2:07.34) also competed in the “B” final of the 200 IM.
Sophomore Iliana Oikonomou earned a second swim in one of her signature events, the 50 freestyle, and finished the “B” final in fifth place with a time of 23.86 to score points for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes’ top entry in the 400 medley relay – comprised of Yu, Kyriakidis, freshman Alaina Skellett and Viguier – finished the night on a high note, posting the third-best time in the field (3:44.12) to cap the Day 1 action in Princeton.
The Big Al Open continues through Sunday, Dec. 2.
