Brown Jr. Named to Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami men’s basketball sophomore guard Bruce Brown, Jr., has been named to the preseason watch list for the annual Oscar Robertson Trophy.

Brown, who will begin his second campaign with the Hurricanes this week, is one of 32 Division I student-athletes named to the preseason list. He also is one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference players featured on this year’s watch list. The recognition is given by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and is one of the oldest in college basketball, originating in 1959. Last season the trophy was awarded to Kansas’ Frank Mason III.

Brown finds himself on the watch list after a record-breaking freshman season at The U. He played in 1,053 minutes last season, in which he scored 391 points by making 134 field goals, all numbers previously unseen by a freshman in Miami basketball history.

Among the brightest highlights in the Boston native’s freshman season was the program’s second ever triple-double, as he finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a resounding 80-46 victory over South Carolina State in non-conference play a year ago.

As the season progressed, so did Brown’s significance to the Miami squad, which went 21-12, 10-8 last season. He contributed 30 and 25 points, respectively, as the Hurricanes recorded top-10 victories over ACC rivals North Carolina and Duke.

The namesake of the trophy, Oscar Robertson, played for the University of Cincinnati between 1957 and 1960. A three-time All American and College Player of the Year, Robertson is the third highest scorer in college basketball history and led the Bearcats to two Final Four appearances while averaging over 30.0 points per game. He played professionally for the Cincinnati Royals and the Milwaukee Bucks while also representing the United States at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

The Canes open regular-season play Friday, when they host Big South member Gardner-Webb. Tipoff at the Watsco Center is scheduled for 8 p.m.
