Two Canes Open in ITA Singles Top 11
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team is the lone program in the nation with multiple players in the top 11 of the ITA preseason singles rankings, as announced Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Sinead Lohan opens the 2017-18 campaign eighth in the country, while sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba follows closely behind at No. 11.
Lohan is the third-highest-ranked senior nationally, while Perez-Somarriba is fifth among sophomores. Only one ACC player, fourth-ranked Sara Daavettila of North Carolina, is ahead of the Miami duo.
Both Lohan and Perez-Somarriba earned First Team All-ACC distinction last season, with the pair placing No. 21 and No. 26, respectively, in the final ITA rankings.
One of two Hurricanes with 100-career singles victories, Lohan is a two-time ITA All-American and a 2016 NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist. Of the Waterford, Ireland, native’s 101 wins, 51 have come against ranked players.
Last year, Perez-Somarriba became the first freshman in program history to reach the NCAA Singles Championship Final Four and the eighth to garner ITA All-America distinction. A native of Madrid, Perez-Somarriba went 12-2 against ranked opponents in the spring and posted a 12-2 mark in ACC play.
In addition to their lofty rankings, Lohan and Perez-Somarriba were both selected to the main draw of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships. They are one of three teammate groups among the 23 main draw choices for the prestigious tournament, held Sept. 30-Oct. 8 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
