Miami Women Enter NCAAs Ranked No. 13
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s track and field team enters the NCAA East Preliminary ranked No. 13 in the NCAA Division I Women’s National Team Computer Rankings for Outdoor Track and Field, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Miami, which opened the outdoor season ranked 16th, is in the top 25 for the 17th time this year. The Hurricanes appeared in the top 25 in every ranking during the indoor season, peaking at No. 10. Nine marks combine to make up Miami’s team score of 130.05 points, with eight coming on the track.
Six of Miami’s nine marks come from the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships, where the Hurricanes placed third as a team with 108 points.
Shakima Wimbley defended her 400m title with an NCAA-leading time of 50.40 seconds, setting ACC, ACC Championship and UM records.
Brittny Ellis earned a silver medal in the 400m with a time of 51.66 seconds that ranks third in UM history and seventh in the NCAA.
Aiyanna Stiverne’s season-best time of 52.19 seconds ranks 11th in the NCAA and earned her a bronze medal in the 400m to complete the podium sweep in the event by the Hurricanes.
Anna Runia won gold in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 57.03 seconds that ranks 13th in the NCAA this season, while Stefani Kerrison ranks 43rd in the country in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.35 seconds.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Carolyn Brown, Wimbley, Stiverne and Kristina Knott defended Miami’s title in the event, setting conference, ACC Championship and school records with a time of 43.36 seconds that ranks sixth in the NCAA this season.
In addition to the six newest marks contributing to the team score, Miami has three marks that are among the best in the country.
Ebony Morrison is 11th in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.96 seconds, while Runia, Ellis, Stiverne and Wimbley combined to run the fifth-fastest 4x400m time in the country at 3:27.87.
Zakiya Rashid is Miami’s lone field competitor contributing to the team score, ranking 31st in the women’s discus with a mark of 54.10m.
The National Team Computer Rankings are compiled by a mathematical formula based on the NCAA Division I Descending Order Lists. Marks from previous seasons are included until enough data can be drawn from the current season and current freshmen aren’t included in the rankings until they compete in an outdoor meet. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the race for a national title. Ranking points don’t equate with points that will be scored at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
