Shakima Wimbley Named ACC Performer of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Shakima Wimbley was named the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week for the fifth time in 2017, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Wimbley picked up her second ACC Performer of the Week honor of the 2017 outdoor season after an outstanding performance at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational at the University of Florida.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Wimbley won section 3 and finished second overall in the women’s 200m at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational with a time of 22.47 seconds — second-fastest in the NCAA this year. Wimbley was the top collegiate finisher in the field of 49, finishing second to 2016 Olympic 200m bronze medalist Tori Bowie. In addition to ranking second in the country, the senior standout’s time leads both the East region and ACC.

Wimbley’s outstanding day at the University of Florida was punctuated with a school record-setting performance in the women’s 4x100m relay. She teamed with Carolyn Brown, Aiyanna Stiverne and Kristina Knott to finish second in the 4x100m and break the school record with a time of 43.58 seconds that ranks eighth in the NCAA, sixth in the East Region and leads the ACC.

The 2017 NCAA indoor champion in the women’s 400m previously earned ACC weekly honors after the Hurricanes Alumni Invitational and was tabbed ACC Performer of the Week three times during the indoor season.

With the regular season completed, the Canes will prepare for the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships. Hosted by Georgia Tech, the 2017 ACC meet is scheduled for May 12-14. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
