Miami Women Rise to No. 18 in USTFCCCA Rankings
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s track and field team climbed seven spots to No. 18 in the NCAA Division I Women’s National Team Computer Rankings for Outdoor Track and Field, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday.
Miami, which opened the outdoor season ranked 16th, is in the top 25 for the 14th time this year. The Hurricanes appeared in the top 25 in every ranking during the indoor season, peaking at No. 10. Ten marks combine to make up Miami’s team score of 100.23 points, with nine coming on the track.
Five of Miami’s 10 marks come from last weekend’s Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, where the Hurricanes posted impressive time in the sprints, hurdles and relays.
Shakima Wimbley posted the second fastest 200m time in the country at Tom Jones, finishing as the top collegian in the event with a season-best time of 22.47 seconds. Wimbley also teamed with Carolyn Brown, Aiyanna Stiverne and Kristina Knott on Miami’s school record-setting 4x100m relay team that finished second at Florida with a time of 43.58 seconds that is ninth in the NCAA.
Stiverne also excelled in the 400m at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, posting a time of 52.35 seconds that is 12th in the NCAA.
The Canes also had two standouts in the women’s 100m hurdles, as Ebony Morrison ran a season-best time of 12.96 seconds that is ninth in the country and Stefani Kerrison posted a time of 13.35 seconds that ranks 34th in the NCAA.
In addition to the five newest marks contributing to the team score, Miami has five marks set at the Florida Relays that are among the best in the country.
Wimbley’s 400m time of 52.05 seconds ranks fifth in the country, while Knott is ranked 54th in the women’s 100m with a time of 11.47 seconds. Anna Runia is 31st in the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 58.61 seconds.
Wimbley, Stiverne and Runia teamed with Brittny Ellis to run the fifth-fastest 4x400m time in the country at 3:27.87, while Zakiya Rashid is Miami’s lone field competitor contributing to the team score, ranking 27th in the women’s discus with a mark of 54.10m.
The National Team Computer Rankings are compiled by a mathematical formula based on the NCAA Division I Descending Order Lists. Marks from previous seasons are included until enough data can be drawn from the current season and current freshmen aren’t included in the rankings until they compete in an outdoor meet. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the race for a national title. Ranking points don’t equate with points that will be scored at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
With the regular season completed, the Canes will prepare for the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships. Hosted by Georgia Tech, the 2017 ACC meet is scheduled for May 12-14. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
