Njoku Selected in First Round of 2017 NFL Draft
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes tight end David Njoku was selected with the 29th overall pick by the Cleveland Browns Thursday night in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Njoku is the fourth Hurricane to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in the past three seasons. Since 2000, Miami has had 30 student-athletes taken in the opening round of the NFL Draft.
With his selection, Njoku becomes the 17th Miami tight end to be chosen in the NFL Draft all-time. Since 2000, Miami has had 11 tight ends taken, including five in the first round.
No other school has had five tight ends drafted in the first round since 2000.
The 2016 campaign was Njoku’s best as a Hurricane as he posted single-season bests in receptions (43), receiving yards (698) and touchdowns (8) en route to earning ACC all-conference honors.
Njoku closed out his redshirt sophomore season on a high note as he scored touchdowns in five of his final six games.
In his final game as a Hurricane in the Russell Athletic Bowl, the New Jersey native finished with five receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown.
As a redshirt freshman in 2015, Njoku caught 21 passes for 362 yards and one touchdown.
