@CanesWTennis Caps Regular Season at No. 43 UVA
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will play its final match of the regular season Sunday at No. 43 Virginia.
No. 39 Miami is set to square off against the Cavaliers at 11 a.m., at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes are 16-5 all-time against Virginia, including 10-2 over the last 12 meetings and 4-2 on the road. Most recently, Miami recorded a 5-2 home victory over then-No. 12 Virginia March 25, 2016.
Miami (10-10, 7-6 ACC) has two players featured in the ITA national singles rankings, with junior Sinead Lohan checking in at No. 17 and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba following her at No. 38.
Lohan and redshirt senior Maci Epstein form the No. 64 pair on the doubles list. Epstein spent the first four years of her collegiate career at Virginia before transferring to Miami for the 2016-17 season.
The Cavaliers head into Sunday’s match at 10-11 (7-6 ACC) on the season and are 3-1 in their past four matches after dropping five in a row.
Rosie Johanson and Cassie Mercer are Virginia’s two representatives on the ITA singles list, placing No. 49 and No. 118, respectively.
Additionally, Mercer pairs with Chloe Gullickson to form the No. 33 duo in the national doubles rankings.
Miami and Virginia enter the match tied with No. 33 Notre Dame for fourth place in the ACC standings.
A victory by the Hurricanes would clinch a top-five seed in the ACC Championship, and they would earn the No. 4 spot and a double-bye if the Fighting Irish also fall at No. 47 Clemson. Meanwhile, a Virginia win would give the Cavaliers the No. 4 seed regardless of Notre Dame’s outcome.
