Four Hurricanes Named to All-ACC Academic Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving student-athletes were among those selected to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Swimming & Diving Team, the conference announced Wednesday.
Senior swimmer Angela Algee (management), junior diver Wally Layland (sports administration), sophomore diver Marcela Marić (psychology) and senior swimmer Julia Schippert (international finance & marketing) were among those recognized by the ACC.
The academic honor was the second of Layland’s career and the first for Algee, Marić and Schippert.
All four Hurricanes were among the top point-getters for Miami in 2016-17, with three qualifying for the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships this past March. Algee and Layland were making their second trip to the NCAA Championships, while Marić qualified for NCAAs for the first time in her career.
Fifty-one student-athletes from all 15 institutions are represented on this year’s All-ACC Academic team, led by Louisville and Virginia with seven honorees each. NC State has six student-athletes, Florida State has five student-athletes, with Duke, Miami, and Virginia Tech have four recognitions apiece. North Carolina, Notre Dame and Pitt each have three student-athletes on the team, followed by Clemson and Georgia Tech with two selections. Rounding out the team is Boston College with one honoree.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
